Dentures

A smiling senior patient inspects his new dentures while a dental assistant helps him with it.For those patients with missing teeth, dentures are one of the options we offer here at Cooley Smiles. Dentures are removable dental appliances designed to replace missing teeth, restoring both function and aesthetics to your mouth. We believe both function and aesthetics are equally important in restoring your smile.

What Are Dentures Made Of?

Dentures are usually made of acrylic and are fabricated in two different ways. Conventional dentures are crafted once all of the patient's teeth are removed, and the gum tissues have healed. Immediate dentures, on the other hand, are made before pulling the teeth and placed right after we finish removing the teeth so that the tissues can heal underneath.

Upper dentures usually have flesh-colored acrylics that cover the palate (the roof of the mouth), whereas lower dentures are shaped like horseshoes but leave room for the tongue. The prosthetic teeth are made of porcelain, plastic, or a combination of both. The dentures are held in place through dental adhesive or suction.

Modern technology allows us to craft dentures that look like natural teeth and allow you to chew and speak normally, restoring your quality of life. These custom dentures will build your confidence and eliminate the anxiety you might have regarding lost teeth.

Getting Used to Dentures

It may take some time to get used to dentures after they are placed. In the first few days, you may experience mild discomfort or soreness in the gums. Adjusting to speaking and chewing with dentures can also take time. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage any initial discomfort.

Start with soft foods and gradually return to a more normal diet as you adjust to the dentures. We will provide instructions on caring for any sore spots that may develop during the initial adjustment period.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

With proper care, dentures typically last between five to 10 years. However, changes in the shape of your mouth over time, due to bone loss and tissue changes, may require adjustments or replacement. Periodically, dentures may need to be relined or rebased to improve their fit.

How to Care for Your Dentures

Proper maintenance is crucial to ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of your dentures. Follow these care tips:
•  Clean dentures daily: Brush your dentures every day to remove food particles, plaque, and stains. Use a soft-bristle brush and non-abrasive cleaner to prevent damage.
•  Soak dentures overnight: Store dentures in water or a denture-soaking solution when not in use to keep them from drying out or warping.
•  Rinse after meals: Rinse your dentures with water after eating to clear away food debris.
•  Care for your gums: Use a soft toothbrush or gauze to clean your gums and any remaining natural teeth to maintain overall oral health.
•  Handle with care: Dentures can be fragile, so be careful when handling them to prevent accidental damage.

By following these guidelines, you can keep your dentures in excellent condition, ensuring they continue to provide comfort, function, and a natural-looking smile. For more information on dentures, give Cooley Smiles a call at (425) 650-3560.
