Laser Dentistry

A close-up of hand holding laser.Laser stands for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation." Laser dentistry is a minimally invasive option of treating various types of dental conditions using lasers. The laser instruments emit a thin concentrated beam of light energy with a thermal output used by our dentists to easily understand its interaction with a particular tissue that can reveal a whole host of oral health concerns. Lasers are currently incorporated in various procedures like treating hypersensitivity, tooth decay, gum disease, and whitening teeth. At Cooley Smiles we use an efficient and comfortable laser for an amazing dentistry experience.

The Importance of Laser Dentistry

Laser dentistry deals with issues relating mainly, but not restricted to, gums. They help remove tissues from partially exposed wisdom teeth, reshape and remove gum tissues that might have overgrown due to medications or during a crown lengthening procedure, remove muscle attachments that restrict tongue or lip movement, and remove small amounts of tooth enamel. They are also useful in repairing certain worn-down fillings or preparing tooth enamel for composite bonding. Lasers are an effective tool for reducing the discomfort from cold sores and canker sores, removing benign oral tumors, or regenerating damaged nerves.

The Benefits of Laser Dentistry

Laser dentistry ensures smooth dental procedures without causing any discomfort to the patient. This is why they are often preferred over traditional methods. Many procedures do not require anesthesia when lasers are used. On top of that, bleeding is also minimized because the high-energy light beam aids in clotting exposed blood vessels. The high-energy laser beam also sterilizes the gums, hence reducing the probability of any infection.

In procedures where a laser is used, patients are less likely to require sutures, and the damage to the surrounding tissue is also minimized. Even the healing time is faster than that of traditional dentistry methods.

One issue with laser dentistry is that it cannot be used on teeth that already have certain types of fillings like a metal amalgam.

The Types of Lasers Used in Dentistry

There are two major types of lasers used by our professional dentists in laser dentistry. These are hard tissue and soft tissue lasers. While hard tissue lasers are primarily used for your teeth, soft tissue lasers are usually ideal for gums. The wavelength of the hard tissue laser cuts through water and bone very accurately. Some of the common procedures for which hard tissue lasers are used include the detection of cavities, tooth preparation, and dental fillings.

Soft tissue lasers use a light wavelength that can be absorbed by hemoglobin and water easily. They are used in procedures dealing with crown lengthening and treating restricted tongue movement. Lasers are also helpful in reshaping the gums for a more pleasant smile.

Aftercare in Laser Dentistry

The post-operative experience for laser dentistry is smoother than that of a traditional procedure. Take care to follow all of the guidelines and instructions given by our team and there should be no complications following this procedure.
