Sedation Dentistry

Close-up of a nitrous oxide delivery system used in sedation dentistry. There are several types of dental sedation available to help patients feel at ease during treatment. Whether you're dealing with mild anxiety or preparing for oral surgery, sedation dentistry can make your visit far more comfortable. The appropriate option depends on the procedure being performed and your level of anxiety. At Cooley Smiles, our experienced dentall team will help you choose the sedation method that best suits your specific needs.

Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. We understand that dental visits can be stressful for some patients, so we strive to make each experience as relaxing and pain-free as possible.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a mild sedative used to promote calmness and reduce anxiety during dental procedures. This option won't put you to sleep, but it may make you feel light, giggly, or euphoric. Many patients find it helps ease their nerves while still allowing them to remain fully responsive.

Administered through a mask, nitrous oxide is inhaled and begins to work quickly. There's no need for pills or injections, just breathe in and relax. After your procedure, we flush the gas from your system by providing pure oxygen through the same mask. This helps you recover within minutes, allowing you to safely drive yourself home and return to your daily activities without delay.

Oral Sedation

For patients with moderate dental anxiety or those undergoing longer procedures, oral sedation may be recommended. This involves taking a prescribed pill about 30 minutes before your appointment. In some cases, an initial dose may be taken the night before to help you sleep.

Oral sedation doesn't put you fully to sleep, but it does create a drowsy, relaxed state. You'll likely feel detached from the procedure and may remember very little afterward. Because of its stronger effects compared to nitrous oxide, you will need someone to drive you home following your appointment.

Sleep Dentistry (IV Sedation)

For patients undergoing complex or lengthy procedures, or for those with extreme dental fear, IV sedation is often the best option. Also known as sleep dentistry, this method involves inserting an IV into your arm to deliver sedative medication directly into your bloodstream.

You'll fall asleep quickly and remain unconscious throughout the procedure. Once the procedure is complete, we'll gently wake you, and you will be monitored as you recover. A trusted adult will need to accompany you to and from the appointment.

Choosing the Right Sedation

The best sedation option depends on your specific oral care needs, the complexity of your dental treatment, and your level of anxiety. At Cooley Smiles, we will walk you through your sedation choices and help you decide what's best for you and the procedure you are having. Our goal is to ensure you feel safe, calm, and cared for every step of the way.
